Kooka Cafe, Purvis Street

True hipster flair is supposed to be nonchalant-cool like Kooka Cafe. Good indicators could include an oak barrel, doubling as a stand for a tray of iced water and cutlery, that matches cement floor, a random cobalt Vespa, and a patch of mint humid-wrecked paint. This is an adult posturing of a lived-in home, unaffected and with no airs.

You’ve probably already seen one too many Instagram shots of the floral motifs on their ceramic floors. Pretty, indeed. Just like the intricate designs lining the interiors of this cafe.

Buffet dinner at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel

The buffet dinner available at Brio’s in the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel is one of Singapore’s most prominent international buffets. While the spread does not offer much variety, individual dishes – featuring popular cuisines such as Western, Chinese, Japanese, and Singaporean – were generally very well-cooked, much more so than the food at your average buffet.

Apart from its food, zen ambience, and impressive service (their staff were always exceptionally polite and eager to share about food items on the menu), the best thing about Shinkei Japanese Restaurant is its accessibility. These factors combine to make dining at Shinkei a most unique experience, especially because it is located in the heartlands.

Rarely in Singapore do we find restaurants with as unique a concept as that of Bistro Cool at Suntec City Mall. The first of its franchise to open in Singapore, Bistro Cool has an amazing playground (named Cool de Sac) for parents to drop their children off temporarily whilst they enjoy their dinner.

Carnivore may have been around for a while now but there still isn’t a restaurant in Singapore that’s quite like it. Besides having its meat cooked churrasco style (that’s “barbeque” for us non-Portuguese speaking folks), they also serve it to each table in a manner that’s quite unlike any other in town—their “roving passadors” will present the meats at every table and will slice it for you if you so wish, right there and then!
